We do not choose, we are chosen

The culture industry means culture turning into a marketplace. Film, music, television, advertising and social media are no longer means of expression; they have become products driven by profit. Whichever film or song succeeds becomes a formula. Stories of the same kind and tunes of the same kind are repeated again and again, because the market does not want risk, it wants guaranteed sales. Entertainment does relieve tiredness, but it does so by diverting attention, not by awakening thought. After a day of stress the screen and the reels submerge a person, so that he does not ask questions. In this same process our buying is no longer free either. We do not buy what we truly need; we buy what the market wants us to buy. Brands sell not needs but the illusion of identity. In this way modern slavery runs not on fear and punishment, but on convenience, entertainment and the illusion of choice. A person feels he is free, while his tastes, his preferences and his desires have already been decided for him. This is "contented slavery", where a person is happy and controlled at the same time.
