Introduction
Published in 1926, this historical book is a detailed study of the state of cattle in India at the time and of the causes of the decline in their quality. It compiles historical information on cattle numbers, breeds, rearing, breeding, uses, milk production and the place of cattle in agriculture.
Drawing on government reports, district gazetteers and other historical sources, it examines the shortage of pasture, the fodder problem, unsuitable breeding, the lack of good bulls, cattle disease, famine, the veterinary system, the export of cattle and the slaughter of useful animals. It also describes the state of cattle in the various provinces and districts and sets out the remedies proposed.
It is an important primary source for understanding the historical condition of cattle in India, the causes of their decline and the reform efforts of the time.
